Welcome everybody! We are a group of Year 7/8 students at Springston School who are connecting to our learning and meeting new challenges. Our teachers are Wendy and Mr T.
I think that education defiantly dosen't have to happen within four walls! I think there are lots of students all through New Zealand that belong to the Correspondence School that don't have traditional classrooms (I wonder if you could somehow contact some of them and talk to them about their experiences?). I think some of the best learning comes from students and teachers experiences that we then bring and pass onto others. I think schooling is important for the sharing part of it. Its a wonderful question I hope you get lots of responses. Mr Webb and Room 8, Melville Intermediate, Hamilton, Waikato.
You don't have to go to school to get an education, you can be homeschooled. If you’re homeschooled you could get a more 'hands on' approach. But if you’re homeschooled then you miss out on things like school camp.
I hadn't thought about correspondence school - great idea to get their view point. It would also be good to hear from people who are home schooled Emma and see what they feel are the advantages for them. I wonder if they can have opportunities like camps too?
I think it depends on each person. I personally like to be in a class learning situation with people, hands on. However I don't think you have to go to school because you can always eLearn.
I personally think you can get an education anywhere but a school is better. You get to socialise with lots of other people and you get a go at anything like Zones, Hip-Hop and Cantamath. You also can get a different education with each teacher you work with instead of the one person that helps you at home. It's also the choice of the person. They might prefer home schooling to a public school.
Is being social a real important part to learning? I agree it does depend on different people and their needs. In the classroom it is really terrific when someone starts buzzing about their learning and then someone else catches it and then the whole class catches it! What a great feeling - does that happen for home schooling and eLearn?
Homeschooling is great for following an individuals needs and interests. There are many opportunities for social learning in a variety of situations - sports clubs, church, scouts etc. There are also homeschool groups who organise activities and camps so although you are not with 30 other kids your own age every day there are certainly times when you can mix with lots of other people.
I think that this is a good question to get you thinking. We can still get education outside of school, but it's easier GOING to school and learning new things for your future instead of bunking off and staying at home.
School can have disadvantages like you can have many distractions and you don't have the bulling like at school. but really you can get an education anywhere. Room7 Nic
I must admit I enjoy the stimulation of having other learners around me but every now and then its nice to have a quiet time to get things finished. Is this where choosing your own timetable is helpful? Having a choice about how you do things?
Yes, I definitely think that you can get an education outside the class room. Because when you go to a sports group you are learning to co-operate. Even if you go on a bush walk you will be getting an education about the out doors. So yes I definitly that you can learn out side the class room.
not all education takes place within the four walls. Some things cannot be learned from a book.
ReplyDeleteI agree some of the best learning involves doing things with others. Does school provide you with this opportunity?

ReplyDeleteLucy, sometimes your school mates can DIScourage you in your learning, too - they can interrupt it by being disruptive.

I agree Libby you can get an education anywhere, but to do that you have to be willing to learn otherwise you will just slack off.
