A Bad Kiwi Campfire

A Bad Kiwi Campfire

The sweet sensation fills my mouth as I sip my hot chocolate. The heat of the crackling bonfire keeps me warm when I sit close. My friends surround me with laughter and smiles.
I open my eyes and my vision isn't real!
All I see is a old rubbish bin on fire and a crazy teacher teaching year 7 and 8's crazy songs which are so babyish! There is no yummy hot food anywhere except fatty pork and chive sausages with old tomato sauce being splurted everywhere. My friends aren't smiling or laughing. Everything has gone wrong!

Why oh why couldn't I've gone to Camp Lakeview for the Summer Holidays, not a School Camp.

Winter poem

Do you remember that time,
The cold breeze hitting your face
As you plunge into an icy cold puddle.
That was winter.

Do you remember that time,
When you go to see to your animals outside
And you step out to find a winter wonderland
Settling like an icy sensation.
That was winter.

Do you remember that time,
When you took a deep breath in
And you smelt that sweet but bitterly cold frost,
And when you took a breath out you pretended to be a dragon.
That was winter.

Do you remember that time,
When you stared into the blazing fire until your eyes hurt.
That was winter.

Rugby Poetry

Do you remember rugby
The way you nailed that guy
And he didn’t get up
And his arm was bent on a funny angle
But he still said, “Good tackle.”
And you helped him off
Remember the flashing lights
And the smell of sweat
That was rugby

Do you remember the mud
The way it covered you
Head to toe
Do you remember
That kid squashing you down
Deep in the mud
Remember he smelled like horse hair
But as he got off you
He helped you up
That was rugby

100 Word Challenge

A Great Kiwi Road Trip.

The sound of music vibrates around my head. A sweet kiwiana smell of L&P swarms into my nostrils as I take another big gulp. I need the energy. I frantically search inside and outside of the car. The windy road isn’t helping - especially when I have an opened drink, ready to spill.

I keep searching everywhere. From the top of the treetops down to the deep roots. In the corner of my eye, I spot a fantail. This was going to be tricky for them. I blurt out in the silence, “I spy with my little eye something beginning with F.”

Learning Today

This shows Callum discussing with Simon about his story he is writing. Callum started by planning his story and then crafted it from a writing seed. Every Thursday we bring a 'seed' and this is something we can grow a story out of.

Jack and the other Callum are working on their Kiwi Creations newspaper as part of our inquiry.

Our Buddies

On Fridays we listen to our buddies read and then read them a story. We are learning how to help them when they get stuck.

Learning Today

Buddy time!- the senior kids are helping the juniors with their reading and playing games with them this morning.
I helped my buddy Savannah with a new game we discussed the rules and we played really well together.

New Zealand Sign Language

This week some of our class got to work with some junior classes and learn to sign. Here are two small video clips: in the first clip Anja is learning to sign with her buddy Brooke. In the second clip Jack and Macaulay are introducing themselves.

Kiwana Poster

For our Growing Up Down Under we have been investigating kiwiana. Here is Hamish's poster he made on Comic Life.

Incredibox

Here is the link (click on the picture) to the neat website Incredibox that we found on Room8@WIS blog today.
Thanks very much for the cool idea Room 8 - Simon just loves it.
Record, share and download your own Incredibox composition that we can use for our  "Night Down Under."

Learning Today

This is our maths time and we are learning to multiply large numbers with Simon. I practiced the strategy using some problems. I feel good about this strategy as it is easy to use and follow. Annabelle

The Big Sad Wolf

On 17 May the whole school went over to the hall to watch the Big Sad Wolf performance. There were 3 actors sharing 7 parts. They did a very good job of remixing the Big Bad Wolf.

The story was about a wolf who was a vegetarian and was accused of eating sheep. Then the boy who cried wolf tricked him into looking like he was eating a sheep. The poor wolf was accused of many things he did not do.

The messages they got across were: don’t judge a book by its cover, and there are always two sides to the story.

Congratulations

Congratulations Team Inaka we have got some go getters this week.

Well done Haidee and Alice winning the Lincoln Rotary Quiz at Lincoln University on Tuesday night. It was a close fought battle but Springston squeaked on top by 2 points. The girls competed against seventeen other schools from the Selwyn District.

Haidee and Alice present the winning book voucher to Karen the school librarian.

Our other top performers this week were Millie, Haidee and Harriet competing at the Canterbury Duathlon at Ruapuna Raceway. The girls have been training hard for a number of weeks. Congratulations to Millie on her 6 th place in the 11 year girls.

Growing Up Down Under

Well this term has started really fast.
Last week was a great start to this term's inquiry when we had a BBQ bunch and camp fire on the school field with all the juniors. We really showed our kiwi cooking skills over the camp barbies.
Helen and Corrina sang some great campfire songs and Simon look the traditionally kiwi bloke!
I wonder what other great plans we can come up with?

In the weekend I played on the ipad with some of the photos we took and tried out some of the apps to see what we could be using with our kiwana ideas. Comic Life is a fun way to get a few photos and add some captions as well. I looking forward to seeing some of your creations up on the blog.

I also used PS Express to change photos and add frames. This was a great photo taken by Matthew, I like how he has shot the picture from down at ground level.
