Wahine Disaster

Cyclone Giselle hit Wellington
Winds gusting
Entered harbor

Only seeing distance of 800 meters
Radar system no longer working
Off course, in line with Barrett Reef

Lifejackets were put on

Harbormaster climb aboard
Abandon ship

Confused and frightened
Slid across deck
Four lifeboats

Waves battering ferry
Struggled to keep hold

Captain and deputy

51 people died middle-aged or elderly
Drowned thrown against rocks
